  • A jogger who saw smoke rising from a fire near his house turned round the corner and saw a body engulfed in petrol flames.
Another witness, who lives nearby, said: "Residents looked on from their yards as the fire burnt the man to death and did nothing. Nobody tried to save him or put out the fire."
Shocked and traumatised residents of Wallacedene, Cape Town, South Africa, said they thought the charred body was the remains of an unnamed youth suspected of burgling houses in the township.

"The residents beat him with sticks, stabbed and hacked him with a panga before putting a tyre around his neck and setting him alight," said an eyewitness.

"The angry residents said they were tired of burglaries and general crime in the township."

The witness said the fire-fighters came and doused the fire but the man was already dead.

A cop at the scene said they found padlocks, latchkeys, padlock keys and a screwdriver lying besides the body.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut said police investigation is under way, but no one has been arrested in connection with the murder.

In 2009 a similar incident occurred in the same neighbourhood when angry residents burned an alleged burglar with three tyres. - Dailysun
