Nairobi, Kenya: A female gangster was on Monday shot dead by police in Dandora area, Nairobi and a gun recovered from her.
Police and witnesses said the middle-aged woman was in the company of eight other men and had earlier on carjacked a matatu in Kariobangi South and robbed passengers at about 5am.
She was shot dead near Dandora police station where the driver of the matatu had driven it to as the gang allegedly attacked and robbed the passengers on board.
According to Nairobi Area head of police Ben Kibue, the driver of the matatu defied the gang’s order and drove to the police station while hooting to seek the attention of the officers.
“The other gang members managed to jump out and escaped but the woman who we believe was an accomplice was caught up as she also ran away. We are looking for the other men who escaped,” said Kibue.
The police boss said the other passengers identified the woman as one of the attackers.
The matatu had picked up passengers from the city centre and was heading to Dandora when nine of them turned out to be thugs.
Kibue wants matatu operators to take the initiative of screening passengers boarding their vehicles to contain such attacks.
