MOMBASA, KENYA: Scores of residents of a densely populated village within Mombasa County have been flocking to the home of a poultry farmer to catch a glimpse of a rare chick that has three legs.
According to John Mwangi, the owner the poultry farm in Bombolulu estate who has been in the business for the last five years, he was shocked when he found out that from initial 100 day old chicks he bought to rear as broiler, one had three legs instead of the normal two.
“I have been in this business for the last five years and have never seen such a condition in a chick, “said Mwangi.
He added that it took three days for him to discover the condition of the chick after one of his workers noticed while feeding them.
“I was shocked after my worker who was feeding the chicks showed me the chick after three days since I purchased them,”added Mwangi.
He said that despite the condition of the chick, it walks comfortably and behaves like the rest of the chicks making it hard for one to notice its condition.
After the discovery, Mwangi was convinced that the chick would not live long but that seems out of his mind since the chick is healthy and has no complications.
“I thought immediately after noticing that it would not survive but since then the chick has been healthy and it is hard for one to differentiate it from the rest,” he said.
Many residents of the area and others from far around Mombasa County including Young Farmers club students from local primary schools flock at the farm to catch a glimpse of the rare chick and the rest of the poultry that Mwangi keeps.
Apart from poultry farming, he has also constructed a fish pond below the poultry house where he keeps tilapia which he says started on January this year.
