  • Deputy President William Ruto on Monday got a reprieve after the International Criminal Court (ICC) postponed his trial date indefinitely.

In a statement from judges overseeing the case, a new date will be fixed after a status conference slated for May 14 which will involve all parties in the case.

Case presiding Judge Kuniko Ozaki said the change in the date will allow the judges time to consider a request by Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to add five more witness in her case case against Ruto and radio presenter Joshua Sang.

On April 22, Ruto’s lawyers filed the request of the postponement in which they requested the trial date of May 28 be vacated in order to allow the defence adequate time to prepare its case.

During the status conference scheduled for May 14, the parties and participants will present their observations on the prosecutor’s request to add five witnesses to the list of witness and Ruto’s request to change the trial date.

The Office of Prosecutor wants to add more witnesses, since all the witnesses who had testified earlier had recanted their testimonies saying they cannot testify against innocent men.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, his Deputy William Ruto and radio presenter Joshua Sang have been indicted by the ICC court and their trials were supposed to commence late this year.
